In the last year, since its creation, the site has expanded in numerous ways. We have a growing list of authors that have chosen to promote their work with us. In January, we began to advertise the site for the first time, this has resulted in a larger viewership, each month has seen more users than the last. Our social media presence has also grown, we now have over 3,000 followers on Twitter and more users following our Instagram and Facebook pages. This means that we have better reach when promoting the authors on our site.
Despite this list of successes, we have come to a difficult realisation; the site cannot be as large as we want it to be in its current form. It would be remiss of us not to accept that there are several issues with the current site; it is too slow and there are problems when trying to access books from a mobile. Often Wix applications stop working for no apparent reason and we can be left in the dark for days until they are fixed. All of this means that we cannot create the platform that we want and authors need.
In truth, we have always viewed the current site as “phase 1” in a much larger scheme, a time to establish our platform and build a community. It is fair to say that we had not expected to move to “phase 2” so soon, but for the reasons we have already given it is necessary. The new site will be far more advanced, allow authors to upload stories themselves and allow readers to follow their favourite authors, so they never miss a new upload.
Here’s how our new homepage will look:
But what does this mean for authors/readers on the current site?
When the new site is live, authors will need to create an account and re-upload their stories- this shouldn’t take long. For our new site we want to reaffirm our commitment to “Quality over quantity”. The vast majority of authors will be unaffected by this, they will be free to re-upload their work when the new site is live. There are, however, a small number of stories that we will not be accepting on the new site- this isn’t because we don’t like them, we wouldn’t have included them on the current site if we didn’t, just that they are not quite at the level that we are looking for. We will notify any author whose work we choose not to include well before the new site is launched.
For readers, there may be a brief period where we transition between the old site and the new, meaning there will be a time when the Rogue Animal website is offline (this shouldn’t be more than a few days at most). When the new site is live you can create an account and follow your favourite authors.
We want to build a better platform for independent authors, a way of standing out in world saturated by content. A place where readers can find good quality content. But we can’t do it alone, we hope that you’ll join us on the new site. If you can, please consider donating to our Kickstarter page, the new site will be extremely costly and we’ll need all the help that we can get. By donating you’ll be able to see new site updates as they come and take part in events such as helping to choose our new site mascot.
UPDATE: Due to issues with Kickstarter, we will now be using Indiegogo, we hope that the campaign will launch later this week.
